Generally, to increase the chances of success for your online business, you need to choose low competition niches for affiliate marketing.
Think about any niche from health to internet marketing to farming then go to Google and do a simple search. See how many people are already in these niches. Can you compete with them?
You’re going to struggle a lot to compete with other key players who are dominating the top pages of Google search results when you choose high competition niches. Equally, if go too narrow in your niche selection you will be limited to a few affiliate offerings.
So, you need to follow a proven process used by successful marketers, which we’re going to outline in a moment.
But before that, let’s learn a few things.
What is an affiliate marketing niche?
In the affiliate marketing context (of course, the term has different meanings), an affiliate niche is a more focused area or topic of a larger industry or subject.
For instance, if you’re looking to start an online business around the health industry, then perhaps your affiliate niche can be weight loss, fitness, yoga, etc.
Affiliate marketing or niche marketing, on the other hand, is the creation of content to promote your products (or peoples’) to your targeted niche market.
What is an affiliate website?
Simply put, an affiliate website is a platform for promoting other peoples’ products to earn a commission when customers buy those products. The products could be physical or digital but usually, most affiliate sites promote physical products.
Finding Profitable Niches for Affiliate Marketing
As said above, if you want to make good money with affiliate marketing, you need to choose profitable niches with low competition.
Remember that customers trust businesses that appear on page one of Google search results. So you want to claim your top spot right there. And that’s why you need to choose a great niche but with low competition.
That’s where the challenge is.
It gets better.
Here are the practical steps to find lucrative affiliate marketing niches:
Step 1: This is the brainstorming stage where you think about your hobbies, interests, passions, trends, etc.
Step 2: Finding profitable products that help to solve your audiences’ problems and generate more revenue.
Step 3: The keyword research and validation stage. This stage involves finding the most searched keywords in your niche.
Step 4: Competitor research. Find out how competitive your choose niche is. It’s always advisable to avoid choosing affiliate niches with high competition, especially if your competitors are popular brands.
That said, how do you know the profitability of an affiliate niche(s)?
Of course, guesswork isn’t allowed at all in affiliate marketing. So, you want to be sure that you’re choosing the right niche from the onset.
The Key Indicators of The Best Affiliate Marketing Niches
How do you determine a profitable niche?
Here are key indicators to look for when choosing a profitable niche for your affiliate site.
Has a well-defined target audience
A profitable niche targets a well-defined audience.
For instance, health is a broad niche that can further be segmented into small sub-niches.
But a well-defined niche targets people who’re looking to solve specific problems. For instance, weight loss is a niche for overweight and obese people.
Ideally, you don’t want to go too narrow or too broad in your affiliate niche.
It’s passion and problem-targeted
People are looking to solve their problems or pursue their passion when looking for products to buy.
If your niche can solve a problem and help your customers pursue their passion, then it’s profitable.
For instance, people are looking for information on how to make money or stop their addiction.
Topics like hiking, romance, travel are all aimed at aiding people to pursue their passion.
Affiliate niches that help in these areas are good.
Has higher-income potentials
Running an online business is the same as operating a physical store.
You will have to invest money, time, and effort to generate income.
So, you want to choose a profitable and sustainable niche.
After all, you want to spend resources where there’s money.
Now dig deeper into Google to see topics that people are interested to read.
For my example, I’m going to use “weight loss supplements for breastfeeding mothers”
Our idea is to find the most searched keywords in that topic and as you can see, there’s a wealth of topic ideas in the area of weight loss supplements for breastfeeding mothers.
Take a few keywords and head over to the free keyword research tool by Wordtracker.
In my case, I’m going to use “fat burning pills”
Take a look at the keyword volume to see whether it’s a good topic to focus on.
The results displayed by the keyword research tool shows topics that people are searching for.
You can also use your preferred keyword research tool to find the CPC value, and other parameters of all the keywords you’re intending to target your audience with.
If you’re considering entering into this niche, then these are some of the areas you will be creating content around. Of course, you can use your chosen keyword as I used weight loss pills as an example.
It doesn’t become obsolete over time
Of course, nothing lasts forever but you don’t want to build a business that generates seasonal income. Besides, a lucrative niche that becomes irrelevant forever in a few months isn’t worth your time.
You want a sustainable business. That’s why you need to choose an evergreen niche. A niche that’s in high demand at all times.
Google Trends can help you find the trends in a particular niche.
For this example, I’m going to use ‘digital marketing”.
From the results, even though the 5-year trend has a few ups and downs, the demand has been going up consistently.
This’s an indication that this topic isn’t going to become irrelevant any time soon.
Let’s take a look at a seasonal topic with a search interest that goes up during certain seasons.
In this case, I’m going to use “Men’s jacket” as my target keyword.
This means that the niche, even though it’s good during certain seasons, you’re going to struggle to make money with it.
Having known the key indicators for profitable niches for your affiliate marketing business, let’s take a look at how to go about the whole process of finding a good niche.
1. List Your Hobbies
Your hobbies are things that you enjoy doing. Writing content related to something you enjoy is more fun.
Your hobbies could be fishing, gardening, traveling, music, cooking, etc.
If you love any of these hobbies, for instance, cooking, you may start an affiliate site and write content promoting kitchen appliances you use while cooking.
The good thing about turning your hobbies into your affiliate marketing business is the existing knowledge you already have with the topic.
And this will make it easy to research and write great content around your chosen topic.
It will be difficult to produce useful and insightful content if you aren’t familiar with the topic. I write about digital marketing because I’m an experienced digital marketer and this makes me enjoy what I do and write.
So, start by listing your hobbies then look for affiliate marketing programs to see the earning potential of the niche you’re considering to choose.
2. Look Into Your Interests
What are your top interests?
Interests are things you have ample knowledge about.
For instance, you could have ample knowledge about internet marketing, organic farming, space exploration, etc.
Think about topics that you find it easy to contribute to ideas when you find people discussing.
These are topics you can explain to a layman or teach someone. You could be interested in talking about politics, and many other topics.
Just make sure you list as many topics as you can then choose the weighty ones. And of course, considering the key indicators, we discussed above.
3. Consider the Level of Competition
As usual, you’re going to rank better on Google if you choose a topic with less competition.
Of course, you can rank with high competitive keywords but you must have been in the game for a long time.
A good rule of thumb is to target less-known niches with a smaller target market.
For instance, if you decide to go with cooking, you may want to narrow down and focus on specific cooking niche targeting specific individuals or cultures.
This will help you rank faster than choosing a popular niche like shoe niche and many others out there.
The idea is to choose profitable niches with less competition but with high demand.
Now, write down a list of all the niches you want to choose then take note of the popular search terms users enter on Google.
Use keyword research tools like Google’s Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, etc, to find out how popular the search terms are- determine their search volumes over a certain period.
Keywords with a search volume of between 1,000 and 3,000 per month can make a good starting point.
You may also want to check how popular the niche is on social media, online forums, etc.
As a rule, you’re going to target both the main keywords and search terms related to your main topic.
4. Choose an Extensive Niche
The last thing you want to see do is choosing a niche that you’ll lack ideas to write about in the next few months.
Affiliate marketing involves churning out continuous insightful and educating content that encourages readers to take action. Besides, producing more content will help you to rank for a ton of keywords.
That’s why even though you should choose a low competition niche, it also needs to be extensive enough that you don’t run out of topics and ideas to write about.
Start by making a list of extensive topics then narrow down your list until you find a niche that meets the key indicators I mentioned earlier in this post.
As a rule, make sure you’re picking a topic you enjoy writing about or you have enough knowledge about.
